Captain Douglas Ricardo “Doug” Beattie MC is an Irish[1] soldier and politician. “Born in barracks” in 1965, his father was a warrant officer in the Royal Ulster Rifles. The family settled in Portadown when he was 10 following the cessation of his father’s regular service but saw Beattie Snr enlist into the Ulster Defence Regiment shortly after.

Jonathan Buckley, MLA is a DUP councillor in the Northern Irish Assembly, representing the Upper Bann constituency. He succeeded retiring veteran legislator Sydney Anderson. During the campaign, he publicly exhorted voters in the constituency to vote and to transfer to other Unionist candidates. He was declared the winner on 3 March 2017

John Fitzgerald O’Dowd is an Irish Sinn Féin politician. He was the Minister for Education in the Stormont Executive from 2011 to 2016 and the Member of the Northern Ireland Assembly for Upper Bann since 2003. He briefly took on the duties of deputy First Minister in 2011 while Martin McGuinness ran in the 2011 Irish presidential election.
